Dakar Rally – The Global Streaming Reach

The Dakar Rally is a huge event, which makes it very popular around the world. Luckily, the race has a lot of broadcasting partners all over the world. To be exact, it’s available for streaming in 190 countries.

You only have five countries where broadcasting is not present. But also, each channel on the list is restricted to its corresponding country. Anyone living abroad will get blocked almost instantly when they try to access it. I’ll show you what that is later on. For now, here’s a list of the official Rally Dakar broadcasters around the world:

Geo-Blocks – Inside Your Public IP

Let’s face it; we all love free stuff. And what better way to stream the 2020 Rally Dakar other than with a free streaming service. Yeah, you have two channels that offer live broadcasting and take nothing in return, France TV and SBS.

No matter what country you live in, if it has a dedicated Rally Dakar channel or not, you always seem to want more. Or in some cases, pay less or nothing at all. But if you live outside of France or Australia, both France TV and SBS will block your access respectively.

This is what we call geo-blocks. A mechanism used to detect a user’s location and block his/her access accordingly. Streaming channels don’t have the rights to distribute their content everywhere, which forces them to limit their access to specific geographical locations.

But how does a channel determine your whereabouts? Simple, your IP address. If it’s in an unsupported region, a geo-error message will appear. Here’s how SBS and France TV greet you when you’re traffic is coming from abroad:

  • SBS: “Sorry, this video is only available to stream within Australia due to publishing rights.”SBS Error 2
  • France TV: “Pour des raisons de droits concedes a France Televisions, cette video n’est pas disponible depuis votre position georaphique.”France TV Error

It’s fine, geo-restrictions have never stopped me before, and it won’t stop you now. In the next part, you’ll learn how to unblock any of the streaming channels mentioned above and stream the 2020 Rally Dakar live wherever you are.

The 2020 Rally Dakar – Everywhere and Free As Well

Even if you were a citizen in the countries, once you cross the borders and connect to the internet in a different region, your channel access will cease to exist. Therefore, expats and travelers won’t be able to stream their local channels even if a valid subscription is present.

Well, that’s about to change since internet tools such as Virtual Private Networks exist. This cybersecurity software is better known as a VPN. It allows you to emulate your location and appear to be browsing the web from a different region based on where the server you connect to is hosted.

Once you connect, your entire traffic will be rerouted through a private tunnel. It gets encrypted, and the VPN will assign you a temporary IP address in the region. As a result, you’ll be able all the restricted websites/channels in the country.

For example, if you connect to a server in France, you’ll obtain a French IP address, which means France TV is accessible now. Likewise, when you connect to an Australian VPN server, you’ll spoof your location into Australia and obtain an Australian IP, giving you full access to SBS.

But that’s not all that a VPN does. Since it encrypts your traffic, you’ll be enhancing your security by a mile:

  • Hides your online activities from your ISP.
  • Avoids ISP throttling
  • Bypasses geo-restrictions
  • Protects you from Man-in-the-Middle and honeypot attacks on public WiFi networks.

The Steps

Now that you know what a VPN is capable of, you can proceed to the step-by-step process and learn how to watch the 2020 Rally Dakar live anywhere:

  1. First, you must sign up with a credible VPN provider. According to our regular tests, the best provider to go for is ExpressVPN.
  2. Get their application and install it on your device. You’ll find dedicated clients on Windows PC, macOS, Android, iOS, and Fire Stick.
  3. Sign in with your VPN account and head over to the server list.
  4. Connect to a server based on the channel you wish to watch the race on:
    • French server for France TV.
    • Australian server for SBS.
    • US server for NBC Sports, etc…
  5. Launch the channel’s website or its dedicated app if available.
  6. Stream Rally Dakar 2020 wherever you might be.

I recommended ExpressVPN above based on my personal experience. Among all the VPNs I reviewed, this one stood tall courtesy of its security measures and quality services. It has over 3000 servers across 94 countries, which is more than enough to suit your unblocking habits.

Also, ExpressVPN adopts a strict no-logging policy. This way, nothing gets collected while you browse the web, and the government won’t find anything on you in case it comes snooping around. However, ExpressVPN isn’t the only elite on the market. Check out what other VPN options you have in the table below.

The 2020 Rally Dakar – Following the Track

This will be the first time the Dakar visits the Middle East. KSA is really interested nowadays with international sports. It started off with a 10-year deal with the professional wrestling promotion, WWE, and now, we have a five-year deal with Rally Dakar.

The race will kick off on January 4th and will round-up on January 18th, 2020. Two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso will be competing in the race, so expect great competition and close calls. The race’s distance will be close to 7,900 km. In my opinion, it’s going to be epic considering how special the roads are KSA. Here’s the route’s map:
